The new Tudor 1926 Luna, the brand's first moonphase watch
Tudor has released a surprising watch featuring a moonphase display and a Sellita movement.
When you think of Tudor, you probably picture the cool Submariner dive watch, with its vintage-style case and dial, and a sturdy Kenissi movement. What I just described is essentially the Black Bay collection, which has been a cornerstone of the brand for over a decade. With that in mind, Tudor's latest release is a bit surprising… a classic watch with a moonphase indicator (a first for the brand), from a collection that's never really gotten much attention (the 1926, which we've never covered here on MONOCHROME), and powered by a Sellita movement. Now let's take a look at the new Tudor 1926 Luna.
While the Black Bay and Pelagos are popular watches often featured in our magazines (and virtually everywhere online and on social media), the Tudor 1926 collection has never really made headlines. It's a classic, understated watch line, perhaps not the brand's bestseller in Europe and the US, but it's quite popular in markets like Asia. Now, however, with the launch of the new Luna collection, Tudor seems to have brought it back into the spotlight.
We're looking at a classic (very classic...) watch with a polished stainless steel case measuring 39mm in diameter and 10.1mm thick. Its understated shape and design create a timeless elegance, somewhere between casual and formal. The case is topped with a sapphire crystal, features a closed caseback, and a screw-down crown embossed with the Tudor logo. It's also water-resistant to 100 meters, making it comfortable to wear for a watch of this size.
The main attraction of this Tudor 1926 Luna is the dial's color and display, as it was the first of its kind. The dial, available in black with gold accents, blue with silver accents, or champagne with black hardware, features an elegant sun-brushed finish and the signature applied hour markers and numerals of the 1926 collection, along with leaf-shaped hands without luminescent coating. A date window is located at 3 o'clock, with a choice of white or black depending on the model; the moon phase indicator is at 6 o'clock, featuring a classic contrasting color.
Another surprise lies within the case. For nearly a decade, we've become accustomed to seeing Kenissi-manufactured movements in most Tudor models. However, the 1926 Luna is equipped with an outsourced movement manufactured by Sellita, based on the SW280-1 architecture (automatic winding, 26 jewels, 4Hz frequency, 41-hour power reserve). Produced to Tudor's exacting standards and calibrated to chronometer standards (no certification required), it achieves an accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day. Despite having an outsourced movement, this watch still comes with a 10-year service interval and a 5-year warranty.
